From the rainforests along the coast to the dry pampas on the Argentinian border, this region has it all! Stunning free stone rivers that can easily be floated, lakes with a backdrop of the Andes mountains and spring creeks that are so small you’d never imagine a 26-inch brown could live there… but they do! Over the last decade consistent runs of big King salmon are common and can be targeted on request, but at Koon Outfitters trout fishing is our specialty.
Where we are?
Koon Outfitters is headquartered in Coyhaique, capital of the Aysén region.
Aysén is Chile’s least populated region, shaped by glaciation that formed countless lakes, channels, and fjords. The region contains both the Northern and Southern Patagonian Icefields—the world’s third-largest after Antarctica and Greenland.
Access via Balmaceda Airport (56 km south) with daily flights taking approximately 2 hours 15 minutes.
The Fishing:
Coyhaique is famous worldwide for big trout on the Simpson River and hopper fishing on the Nirehuao River—but these are just two of hundreds of fly fishing options in Aysén. Our region is a dry fly angler’s paradise. Whether you target trophy trout on streamers and big dry flies in pristine lakes and spring creeks, or prefer sight-fishing cruising trout, we’ll customize your experience.
Most fishing uses dry flies, but certain conditions favor streamers. Due to Patagonian winds, we recommend bringing a stiff 6wt or 7wt with sink-tip line, though your favorite 5wt and floating line will work most days.
Koon Outfitters Destinations
Beyond Coyhaique, we specialize in Cerro Castillo fly fishing and the Baker River—two of southern Chile’s premier angling destinations. Cerro Castillo Lake District (100 km south): Fish numerous lakes and lagoons beneath stunning glacier-covered peaks. This region offers some of the best lake fishing in southern Chile and prime opportunities for truly large trout. Wade-fish islands and shorelines or fish lake structure from our specialized motorboats.
Baker River Region (300 km south): Fish one of Chile’s crown jewels—the Baker River, the largest by volume in all of Chile. Famous for stunning turquoise water and world-class fishing. Additional options include Lago General Carrera, Lago Bertrand, and the challenging Cochrane River.
Custom Remote Expeditions: For adventurous anglers, we offer custom trips to remote, wild Chilean Patagonia locations (advance planning required).
